The Cubs ran into another out in the ninth.
A St. Louis Cardinals rally in the ninth inning, playoff implications and other drama added to the excitement. After winning yesterday, Chicago will be going for a sweep of St. Louis this afternoon, shrinking their deficit to just four games and giving them their sixth straight victory.
"It was a lot of fun", said Bryant, who recorded an RBI double and his 25th home run.
Even after the loss, the Cardinals still lead the National League Central by 4 1/2 games over the Pittsburgh Pirates, and the Cubs are lurking just five games back. The Pirates faced the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday night. He and Joe Maddon were both tossed as warning were already issued.
"That was a base hit the moment it left the bat", Maddon said. I'm really proud of our guys for that. "You can take that book and read it yourself because I don't give a crap about that book". Heyward called off center fielder Tommy Pham and camped a few steps behind where he would catch the ball.
"Whatever comes up, he's ready for it", Matheny said. "It's obvious that we're playing on the same level as they are right now". Pham launched Jon Lester's seventh pitch of the game over the left-field bleachers for a 1-0 lead. Right now, we're catching up in that regard. It's not just the Cubs catching up to them, either.
Yankees 5, Mets 0: Carlos Beltran hit a three-run, second-deck home run on a 100 miles per hour fastball from Noah Syndergaard in the first inning, Michael Pineda (11-8) allowed four singles in 51/3 innings and the Yankees beat the host Mets.
In Arlington, Texas, Cole Hamels struck out 12 over seven innings. Mike Matheny may not have won a World Series as manager of the Cardinals quite yet, but Matheny did set a record for managers in Cardinals history.
CHICAGO (AP) - The odds of the Cubs overtaking first-place St. Louis in the NL Central were diminished Sunday, but Chicago's confidence wasn't. He also leads the Cubs with 30 homers. Catcher David Ross caught the throw from left fielder Chris Denorfia, but the ball came loose as Peralta scored.
The bad part of the day for the Cardinals was when the Cubs beat them 5-4. He led them to an easy 9-1 win over the Braves, allowing only six hits in seven innings.
Matt Holliday and Randal Grichuk, to prolific offensive players, are expected to begin easing into the starting lineup over the next few days.
