Spieth took a one-shot lead over Stenson into Sunday's final round and had doubled his advantage by the turn, although the 22-year-old was not having it all his own way.
He turned to raise them to a crowd gathered below, and camera flashes under a gloomy sky made it feel like a rock concert. He finished in the top four in all four majors and finished with a record cumulative score of 54 under par.
The Texan capped a superb year by clinching victory in the season-ending Tour Championships at East Lake in Atlanta, a win that saw him pocket the US$10 million (HK$78 million) bonus to the victor of the FedEx Cup.
But McIlroy, who won two majors past year , failed to win in the latter stages of the season, and yet that didn't keep him from holding and relinquishing the No. 1 ranking that went back to Spieth on Sunday.
Even when he missed back-to-back cuts to start the FedEx Cup playoffs, Spieth spent the month trying to peak for the most important event in the lucrative series.
Spieth shot a closing one-under-par 69 at East Lake Golf Club for a nine-under total of 271 and his fifth win of the season, including the Masters and U.S. Open.
Jordan Spieth added further accolades to an already stellar campaign on Monday when he was named victor of the PGA of America player of the year award and the Vardon Trophy for the lowest scoring average.
With the victory, and with Jason Day finishing outside the top five, Spieth is once again No. 1 in the Official World Golf Ranking.
Greller took a leave of absence beginning in January of that year, and when he soon realized that Spieth had a future in the game tendered his resignation in May.
The campaign's one-two punch of Spieth and Day followed a commanding season from Rory McIlroy, the 26-year-old Northern Irishman who closed last year's majors season by winning the British Open and PGA as he reigned as world number one. "And a lot more motivated, a lot more hungry to stay on top of the world". That's more than four times what Tiger Woods earned in the same time frame, and just shy of Phil Mickelson's earnings for the year. There are no flukes on that list - Woods (three times), Nicklaus (twice), Gene Sarazen (twice), Walter Hagen, Bobby Jones, Arnold Palmer, Lee Trevino and Tom Watson. Next season will be interesting, as there will be high expectations.
Encouraging words from both his parents and South Korean veteran K.J. Choi helped him weather the storm as he steadily improved his game. Scott will need to figure out something quickly if he wishes to continue being one of the best in the world. What also doesn't get enough attention are two tournaments he lost.
Two holes later, Spieth rolled in a 46-foot putt for birdie to retain his two-shot edge, drawing a wry grin from the Swede who acknowledged his effort with a fist bump on the green.
