Landon Donovan to the rescue of the Pittsburgh Steelers?
Probably not, but a Steelers' fan tweeted the former Earthquakes' star after Pittsburgh lost to the Baltimore Ravens in overtime Thursday night, asking him in a roundabout way if he'd like to kick for her Steel City favorites. "Has it been said yet the Steelers need a new kicker? Cue @landondonovan."
"I'm in," Donovan tweeted back on Friday.
Donovan, who has retired from soccer, was presumably kidding. But at 33, he'd be a kid among NFL kickers.
Sebastian Janikowski of the Raiders is 37. The 49ers'
Phil Dawson is 40.
Pro Football Talk reported the Steelers had begun the search for a new kicker Friday after
Josh Scobee missed two field goals in the fourth quarter Thursday night. Had he made one, Pittsburgh likely would have been the winner of a game that was tied 20-20 at the end of regulation.
Vick's passer rating was high, but his QBR, a more modern quarterback assessing stat, was not.
Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker hit a 42-yard field goal in the final seconds of regulation and made a 52-yarder with 5:08 left in overtime to give the Ravens a 23-20 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers Thursday night.
The Goats: Scobee is going to get a lot of heat for the loss here, as he had a chance to put the Steelers over the top but missed a pair of field goals. Flacco threw a touchdown pass and did just enough late, though Baltimore (1-3) got plenty of help from the Steelers (2-2). Le'Veon Bell had 129 yards on 22 attempts, including a 22-yard run at the beginning of overtime that set the Steelers up inside Ravens territory. "I just have to let it play out". Reed has also been quite busy retweeting the numerous messages of support he's gotten from Steelers fans who feel the same way. After the game, the Steelers coach answered a question about looking for a new kicker by saying "we have to turn the stones over". It was a hard-fought game on both sides.
I wouldn't wish the life of a kicker on anyone. He caught five passes for a team-high 42 yards.
A loss would dropped the Ravens to 0-4, a mark only one team has ever recovered from to make the postseason.
Meanwhile, 10 days between games gives this offense a chance to adapt to Vick, who is a completely different player than Roethlisberger. Bell had one of the highest percentages of his team's offensive production last season and now that he has returned, he likely will be the main focal point for the Steelers.
For most of the night, it appeared Pittsburgh would survive with Roethlisberger relegated to a sweat suit after spraining his left knee last week against St. Louis.
Not coming away with any points loomed large when on their next drive, the Ravens settled for a 40-yard field goal by Tucker. He is six for ten on field goal attempts thus far, but his season could be over.
The Steelers eventually lost the game in overtime... and Snoop thinks Scobee should pay with his job. Scobee also opened the scoring with a 45-yarder in the first quarter. Haley kept Vick under wraps when Vick replaced Roethlisberger late in the third quarter against the Rams.
Wide receiver Michael Campanaro gave the Ravens a 7-3 lead when he ran 9 yards for a touchdown on a reverse with 25 seconds left in the first quarter. These misses were clearly the difference in the game.
They have won a game, and next they play the Cleveland Browns on October. 4, followed by a game against the 49ers in San Francisco a week later.
