Pederson, the offensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs, has accepted an offer to become Philadelphia's coach, a person with knowledge of the decision told media outlets on Thursday night. The Chiefs will play New England on Saturday in an NFL Divisional round playoff game.
Opinions have clearly been split since the report came in that the Eagles are going to name Doug Pederson as the team's next head coach.
Pederson, who started nine games at quarterback for the Eagles in 1999, also could be looking at former Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz, who was most recently the Buffalo Bills' defensive coordinator in 2014, before spending 2015 as a consultant for the NFL's officiating department. For additional insight, here's what Chiefs writer Joel Thorman of Arrowhead Pride had to say about Kansas City's offensive coordinator.
Reid has some in-house options, including assistant head coach/receivers coach David Culley, who was reportedly a candidate for the Lions' offensive coordinator job in 2014. In relief, Pederson helped the Miami Dolphins capture Don Shula's record 325th coaching win in 1993. "I think it's good for them".
The 47-year-old Pederson was the fifth candidate to interview with the Eagles. The two-time Super Bowl winning coach spent 12 seasons with the Giants, who granted the arch-rival and division foe permission to interview Coughlin. Additionally, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport said the two parties were "deep down the road" in conversations about Coughlin becoming the Eagles' coach, making it sound like a deal was nearly done and the Birds would have their head coach in place by the end of the day.
According to NBC Sports, the Eagles are violating league rules by hiring a coach still actively involved in the post-season. There is also a strong possibility that Shurmur could be Pederson's offensive coordinator since the two have worked together previously. Reid has occasionally ceded play-calling duties to Pederson for short bursts. Joining Reid in Kansas City, where Alex Smith, Jamaal Charles, and made the Pro Bowl, and Charles made All Pro.
"They follow that up by saying they've become better men, better husbands, better fathers, better friends due to their experience having been a New York Giant".
Although the Chiefs' offense totaled 331.2 yards per game, and the passing game averaged just 203.4, under Kelly this year, the Eagles averaged 364.4 yards a game and 255.4 through the air.
"Safe" is one way to describe the current Eagles coaching search.
"It was a great opportunity, I thought, for him to visit with a great organization - phenomenal organization", Reid said Thursday.
