Joerger led the Grizzlies into the postseason all three years he was there while accumulating a regular-season record of 147-99.
"I am thrilled to welcome Dave to the Sacramento Kings", said general manager Vlade Divac.
Joerger was sacked by the Grizzlies on Saturday after three playoff berths in three years.
What is curious about the Kings' interest in Dave Joerger is that they have already interviewed Elston Turner for the position. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team did not release the terms of the deal.
A second round of talks between Dave Joerger and the Sacramento Kings has been scheduled for Monday, after substantive discussions on Sunday about the Kings' coaching vacancy, according to league sources.
Joerger appears to have gotten fired in part because he sought permission from the Grizzlies to interview for the open Kings job. However, they took a step back this past season with a record of 42-40, thanks to a rash of injuries that led to the club breaking a record for most players used in a single season.
Joerger becomes the Kings' ninth coach since their last winning coach, Rick Adelman, was shown the door in 2006. That happened under the Maloofs and Geoff Petrie, who all left the franchise in 2013 when Vivek Ranadive bought the team and hired Malone. Sacramento underachieved with Karl at the helm finishing with a 33-49 record this past season, which marked the 10th consecutive year missing the playoffs. However, they should consider making a quick decision before other teams get their preferred target for the head coach vacancy.
D'Alessandro was replaced by Divac a few months after the move.
Joerger had been with Memphis since before the 2007-08 season. Within the league, coach Joerger totaled three rings in five seasons before moving to the National Basketball Association D-League in 2006.
