Tesla Motors delivered 14,370 vehicles to customers in the second quarter of this year, over 15 percent less than its own target, the USA electric-car maker has said.
Tesla delivered fewer cars in the second quarter of 2016 than planned, as pressure mounts for the company to keep up with the huge and growing demand for its electric vehicles.
Tesla, led by Silicon Valley star Elon Musk, delivered 14,370 vehicles during the second quarter, missing its target of 17,000 vehicles, it said in a statement on Sunday. Tesla had, at that time, confirmed its full-year guidance of 80,000 to 90,000 vehicles.
"The extreme production ramp and high-mixed of customer-ordered vehicles still on trucks and ships by the end of the quarter were the primary reasons for its lower-than-expected vehicle deliveries", according to a news report published by Opp Trends.
In all fairness, Tesla Motors (NASDAQ:TSLA) is not under obligation to report every crash involving its cars. Tesla held a public stock offering on May 18, well before it informed the general public about the Autopilot crash, which Carol Loomis of Fortune Magazine argues could have had a material impact on share prices. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is now investigating the recent crash resulting in the death of 40-year-old Joshua Brown.
It's worth noting that the carmaker missed its production target for the first quarter of the year as well.
By the end of the second quarter, Tesla was churning out 2,000 cars a week.
The company has been increasing its production as it prepares to meet the production deadline for Model 3, its mass market sedan, which was ambitiously brought forward by two years. While Tesla was firm that the autopilot is improving all the time, there are still imperfections in it that need the driver to remain attentive at all times, Venture Beat reported.
"Tesla then provided NHTSA with additional details about the accident over the following weeks as it worked to complete its investigation, which it ultimately concluded during the last week of May", Tesla said.
