And Clinton's campaign announced her support for a "public option" - a government-run alternative to private health insurance - bringing her closer to Sanders on health care.
She said Sanders' supporters are going to go to the Green Party, not to presumptive Democrat presidential nominee Hillary Clinton. Democrats also included a push for a -an-hour minimum wage when they announced their official party platform Saturday. Sanders' presence and voice, Grijalva said, will be important to unity.
Aides to Clinton and Sanders both hailed the newly amended platform draft as the "most progressive" in party history.
But his side downplayed the prospect for major clashes in Philadelphia, calling the platform a victory that reflects Sanders' influence on the party.
"If it were not for the Sanders campaign, we wouldn't even be having this conversation", said pro-Sanders delegate Cornel West, the civil rights activist and philosopher.
"None of this would have happened in this forum without Bernie Sanders pushing this issue front and center over and over again", said environmentalist Bill McKibben, a supporter of the Vermont senator. Barack Obama, but many of her supporters had not.
They hunkered down in back rooms at the DoubleTree by Hilton outside Universal Studios, trying - and for hours, failing - to broker agreements on the minimum wage and trade.
It was set to begin at 3 p.m. ET, but members met only to approve the preamble and then broke for several hours before starting again at 11 p.m. ET.
Soon after Clinton unveiled her plan, Sanders praised the steps taken by the Clinton campaign. Clinton and Sanders backers weren't able to come to a consensus on worldwide trade, specifically the Trans-Pacific Partnership, while hammering out the Democratic platform for 2016.
But Clinton's allies didn't want to embarrass Obama in his own party's platform.
In such a scenario, it appears that Americans would be well-disposed to voting for a candidate running on a third party ticket, although the success rate of such a presidential bid succeeding still remains a long shot. Yet in late May, she reached out to Sanders and millions of his liberal followers by suggesting during a campaign stop in Virginia that she would be open to allowing some people under the age of 65 to buy into Medicare.
The draft's current language reflects Clinton's views and advocates working toward a "two-state solution of the Israel-Palestinian conflict" that guarantees Israel's security with recognized borders "and provides the Palestinians with independence, sovereignty, and dignity".
But shortly after the minimum wage proposal sailed through unchallenged, two other Sanders-backed amendments to expand Social Security got shot down. "If he saw that you can't have a revolutionary campaign in a counter-revolutionary party, he'd be welcomed to the Green party". Instead, Sanders has sought to extract concessions on policy issues central to his campaign.
The Democratic-leaning polling firm Public Policy Polling has cited wary Sanders supporters as one of the major reasons Mr. Trump is hanging tough in states like Virginia and Pennsylvania. Some companies, such as fast food chains, have begun to automate, a process that would reduce work forces on the lower end and, ironically, benefit Democratic campaign donors in Silicon Valley.
