Manchester United has begun negotiating the transfer of Paul Pogba, according to Sky Sports. Reports had suggested that an official bid from United was on the way and this may be attempt to speed up that process or simply improve what is already on the table.
Real Madrid have rarely been priced out of the market for any player in recent years, but the huge spending power of United appears to have ended their interest in Pogba.
The bidding will start at around £85 million for the 23-year-old - but the full cost of the transfer fee is likely to reach over £100 million.
It appears as though Mourinho's opinion hasn't changed and Mata will probably have to leave the club if he doesn't want to spend most of the season on the bench.
Meanwhile, club legend Paul Ince has urged his former club to make a move for the talented Frenchman.
American-based owners the Glazer family have sanctioned the move, secure in the knowledge that United's highly-successful commercial arm are continuing to sign global deals that are keeping the cash tills ringing at Old Trafford.
United have prioritised signing Pogba as their central midfield addition.
The 27-year-old Armenian has signed a four-year contract after joining from Borussia Dortmund, with the option for a further year. "The league needs star players, charisma, and at the moment they are not in England", he said of the reported United transfer target.
Spanish giants Real Madrid are one of the favourites to land the French playmaker, the reports added.
Pogba's future could soon be decided after his worldwide commitments with France ended following the Euro 2016 final on Sunday, though Raiola insists his client is open to the possibility of staying in Turin, where he is now contracted to remain until 2019. His agent, Mino Raiola, is understood to have advised him to join Manchester United and has promised the club he will do his utmost to persuade Pogba to join them.
