Pulling in $103 million, Secret Life of Pets garnered the biggest debut for an original, non-sequel animated film, besting Inside Out's $90 million from previous year.
USA box office results for the film, which has a soundtrack composed by Thomas Newman, saw it surpass Toy Story 3's 110.3 million U.S. dollars to become the biggest Disney/Pixar animated opening.
The Secret Life of Pets is the new box office champion, and it finally knocked out the top position of the Finding Dory, which is running successfully after three weeks of the release.
Even with the drop, Dory this weekend surpassed Captain America: Civil War to become the top film of 2016 in America, with its $423 million (£326.7 million) in grosses.
The Shallows is not just treading water despite a ninth-place finish, with an estimated $4.8 million weekend and $45.8 million domestic total against a $17 million budget.
The Legend of Tarzan's million opening on Independence Day weekend had been highly disappointing considering its $180 million budget, but the blockbuster led by True Blood's Alexander Skarsgard seems to be benefiting from the absence of direct competition. The Secret Life of Pets opened with a very impressive $103.2 million.
With global totals added in, Finding Dory has grossed $642.8m globally to date. In fact, it seems likely that "Pets" will claim the No. 1 crown again next weekend, barring a breakout performance from "Ghostbusters". It certainly looks like "Pets" is doing extremely well at the box office. Mike and Dave are headlined by a host of popular names in Zac Efron, Adam Devine, Anna Kendrick and Aubrey Plaza, but those friendly faces were apparently not enough to do more than a 4th place worthy $16.6 million.
The Secret Life of Pets was produced by Illuminated Entertainment for $75 million before marketing.
Fine said sometimes animated films to miss the mark, like with this summer's "The BFG", but overall family friendly flicks are in demand.
The Purge: Election Year rounded out the Top 5 with $11.7-M from 2,821 theaters in its 2nd frame for a domestic take of $58.1-M and worldwide total of $60.3-M.
It is produced by the god in the name of animation world, Illumination Entertainment, where you got to see the creativity of the animated world by their fantastic animators and the team.
