New mobile game "Pokemon Go" has become an overnight sensation with US fans but also played a role in armed robberies in Missouri, the discovery of a body in Wyoming and minor injuries to fans distracted by the app, officials and news media reported on Monday.
Three US teenagers who allegedly robbed almost a dozen victims by luring them to secluded areas using the Pokemon Go smartphone app have been charged, with a fourth referred to juvenile services. Specific locations have also been identified as PokeStops, where players can gather to train their Pokemon in gyms and collect potions.
"If say a particularly rare Pokemon turned up at one of these locations, multiple people could catch it so that makes it something that you can actually do with other people". Pokemon Go enables players to locate Pokemon in their natural environment.
An American woman found a dead body while she was looking for a Pokemon in a river near her home.
Some people have pointed out that because it works in real time, if you are close to another player in the game you can probably see them in real life. You can decide how serious the problem is for yourself, but I'm going to bid farewell to my menagerie of Global Positioning System monsters until Niantic fixes this.
Nintendo saw shares since the game's release on 6 July adding more than $US7bn to the company's market value.
Since last Wednesday, at least 7.5 million people have downloaded the app.
