Fueling speculation Tuesday night that Gingrich was the imminent pick, Fox News Channel - on which the outspoken former Peach State representative appears frequently as a commentator - had suspended its contract with him.
According to a statement released by Fox News Executive Vice President Jay Wallace, Newt Gingrich will no longer retain his contributor arrangement with the news organization.
Fox host and Trump enthusiast Sean Hannity allowed Newt Gingrich to take his private jet to a meeting with Donald Trump, CNN reports. Gingrich then went on to tout Ohio Gov. John Kasich as "the most obvious" vice presidential pick.
But hours later, Trump appeared at a high-profile rally with Pence, where the governor received an enthusiastic reception. He joined the network in 1999, and his role was suspended in 2011 when he ran for president in 2012. If Gingrich doesn't exactly walk the walk, he does love America so much he can't keep his trousers up. In a conversation with Denis O'Hayer on "Morning Edition", Towery looked at the political pluses and minuses of Gingrich as a Trump running mate.
There are some other Republicans still in the running, however.
But Trump, ever the unconventional candidate, is also reportedly considering at least one prominent Democrat for the position. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) - one of Trump's first supporters - was also flying to Indianapolis to meet with Trump. "And he likes the image of a businessman and a general coming to Washington as outsiders".
Gingrich has worked as a consultant on Trump's campaign, and said earlier this month that he was being vetted to be a prospective vice presidential pick. The Republican presumptive nominee said he will announce his selection within a few days, noting that he already had someone "really good" in mind.
