The 60D's 200 mile range is slightly less than the Model S 60's 210 mile range, likely thanks to the dual-motor setup and a heavier curb weight.
The company pointed out that the May 7 crash in Florida, in which the driver was killed, was the first fatal crash in more than 130 million miles driven by Tesla drivers using the Autopilot system.
Seeks clarification on specific issues on how the systems works in regard to crossing traffic at intersections, compromised signals from sensors and cameras, as well as how this kind of information is usually conveyed to occupant of the vehicle or driver.
The driver and passenger were unharmed, and Tesla suggested the system was not being used properly.
The watchdog is also considering whether autopilot was in use during a third collision involving a Tesla vehicle that occurred on 1 July.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are now probing the crash and Autopilot's safety, while the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is investigating whether Tesla disclosed the accident promptly. The information request is a routine step in an investigation into the crash, spokesman Bryan Thomas said. "Up until now, the whole autonomous thing has been this new technology consumers have been buying into". Other vehicle manufacturers and even technology giants also have billions of dollars invested in autonomous driving systems.
Although the NTSB has no regulatory powers, the agency can make recommendations concerning self-driving rules and regulations.
The other incident resulted in a Model X hitting a guard rail on a highway in Pennsylvania before flipping onto its roof. The Model X is a luxury SUV and it still costs like one. The driver had also claimed that the Autopilot was engaged at the time of the incident.
Over the weekend, a silver Model X crashed through a guardrail before careening off road and coming to a stop.
"He did not do so and shortly thereafter, the vehicle collided", Tesla pointed out. Tesla states clearly in its owner's manual that drivers should stay alert and keep their hands on the wheel to avoid accidents when the Autopilot feature is engaged.
Earlier this month, Tesla said it missed its sales targets for the second consecutive quarter, and is on track to miss its full-year goal of 80,000-90,000 vehicles.
