Indeed, he seems to be caught in a classic tug of love, between his heart -- apparently yearning for a combative wingman like New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie -- and his head, which may lean toward the more conventional political selection of someone like Indiana Gov. Mike Pence.
In a nod toward party unity, Trump will feature several former presidential competitors, including Cruz, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, Ben Carson and Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee.
The Indianapolis Star said that Pence had been chosen and a Trump campaign insider confirmed the candidate was moving in that direction, though his final decision would not be clear until the actual announcement took place.
Pence's team has gotten word to start preparing to get the official nod Thursday, and the Trump campaign is now planning for a scenario with Pence as the running mate, according to two sources familiar with the process. Trump said in a Tuesday interview with The Wall Street Journal that Sessions, Trump's top Senate advocate, is also still in the mix.
Gingrich, 73, is a close adviser to Trump with a wealth of ideas and deep experience in the legislative process from his time as speaker of the House of Representatives in the 1990s. He's also brought his finalists on tour, having them opening for him at speeches and rallies to test their receptions before his crowds.
At least according to Gingrich. "But I understand that the way that some on the left, and frankly some in the national media, have mischaracterized this law over the last week might make it necessary for us to clarify the law through legislation".
Pence is in a heated re-election bout to hold on to his in governorship.
Pence's strong Christian identity could help shore up support among evangelicals for Trump.
Should he join forces with Trump, Pence, a deeply conservative former congressman and talk-radio host, could help him unite the disparate blocs within the Republican coalition - especially social conservatives and establishment leaders, who remain skeptical of if not outright hostile to Trump. The 73-year-old would be the oldest candidate ever to become vice president.
"I'm just very honored and humbled to be on a list of truly remarkable people that are being considered by out nominee for this position".
Update, 2:45 p.m.: Both CNN and NBC are now reporting that they have sources who say other reports about Pence being picked are "premature."Newtmentum lives!" The timing is aimed at energizing Republicans ahead of next week's Republican convention in Cleveland. "This man is going to be a great president and you can really tell a lot about a person when you get around their family", said Governor Mike Pence.
But 24 hours before Trump is set to reveal his vice-presidential choice at an event in New York, Republican allies cautioned that the celebrity mogul candidate could still spring a surprise.
The convention will highlight religious leaders such as Jerry Falwell Jr. and Haskel Lookstein, the NY rabbi who converted Trump's daughter Ivanka to Judaism.
"My guess is you're going to hear either tomorrow or Thursday", Gingrich said.
