Cormier will now face former UFC middleweight king Anderson Silva, who accepted the non-title light heavyweight scrap on just two days' notice, at UFC 200.
All three judges scored the bout 30-26 as Cormier used his wrestling to take down Silva, who is already in the discussion as being the greatest fighter of all time.
Silva (33-7) hasn't fought since he suffered a decision loss to Michael Bisping in February.
Soon after news broke of the matchup, Nick Kalikas of MMAOddsmaker opened the fight with Cormier at -600 and Silva at +400. UFC 200 lost its main event and the promotion may have lost its most talented athlete for a few years.
"I think I'm in good shape and I don't want Daniel to think I'm underestimating him or coming in here to try to challenge the champion", Silva said after the announcement he would fight at UFC 200.
Of course, while Silva is arguably the best to ever do it, the 41-year-old has just one win (which was ruled a no contest) in his last four fights.
According to Dana White, Cormier had requested that the fight be fought at 210lbs, presumably because his weight-cutting schedule had been disrupted after the revalation that Jones had been removed from the fight due to an anti-doping violation.
"I've been taking the same supplements for the majority of my career and I've been so outspoken about being against any type of performance-enhancers", Jones said, per MMAFighting.com's Shaun Al-Shatti. As White walked out of the ballroom following that press conference, Silva and manager Ed Soares "immediately" called him to ask for the match, White said.
Jon Jones needs to mend some fences with UFC president Dana White after this week is over. The show's new featured attraction will be the women's bantamweight bout between champion Miesha Tate and Amanda Nunes. The heavyweight slugfest between Brock Lesnar and Mark Hunt will serve as the event's co-headliner.
