The Ghostbusters have failed to capture The Secret Life of Pets in the race for the North American box office title.
Ghostbusters was No. 2 with $46 million and actually had a better per-screen average playing on 3,963 screens vs. Pets' 4,381.
Watch the Ghostbusters talk ghouls, gags, and girl power! It will likely inspire a new family film franchise, and is simply the latest in a long line of hits featuring talking animals.
Based on the minuscule returns from Woody Allen's last several films, I expected his latest to also have a lackluster debut. It's great news since the movie itself was delightful, and it is really exciting to see Sony's passion for the franchise.
The animated movie is offering to continue to rule all the way. However, it's the highest grossing live-action comedy in over a year with an estimated $46 million (topping "Ted 2" which opened with 33.5 million in July 2015).
Emma Watson was approached to star in the movie but she refused saying that the commitment to a franchise was very time consuming. Feig's "Ghostbusters" had the vocal support of director Ivan Reitman (a producer on the reboot) and Murray, who makes a cameo in the film. It may make more domestically than Zac Efron and Aubrey Plaza's other collaboration from this year, Dirty Grandpa, which earned $35.6 million.
But while a lot of the negative feedback came before the movie was even released, they were all silenced by the good reviews it got when it came to cinemas. The 2016 version tells a different story while paying homage to the original. It has earned a total of $721.8 million up till now all over the world. The film is tracking strongly and could put a dent in the audience for "Ghostbusters".
More importantly for Sony is if the film will have the legs to draw enough moviegoers throughout the summer to warrant a sequel, which is probably already in the early planning stages. And it still needs to open in several worldwide markets, including our own!
