Donald Trump officially introduced Indiana Gov. Mike Pence as his running mate at a campaign event in Manhattan.
"We were prepared to respond with the many ways in which Mike Pence is the most extreme pick in a generation-a doubling down of Trump's divisive rhetoric and policies".
He says he has been friends with Trump for 15 years and this is "just another one of those steps along our friendship and a hard decision for him to make, and he made what he thought was the best decision". "We need strong borders", says Donald Trump.
The selection of Pence was widely praised by conservatives within the Republican, many of whom continue to argue that Trump lacks conservative credentials making them tired about supporting him. But his hardline ideology is also at odds with Trump, who has largely avoided wading into social issues.
"What a difference between crooked Hillary and Mike Pence", he said.
"Let's make IN the first state on the board to make Donald Trump the 45th president of the United States and send another Hoosier to the Vice President's office".
Addressing the terrorist attack in Nice, France, that killed at least 84, Trump said the world is experiencing "horror beyond belief, no matter where you look". Pence's demeanor is as calm as Trump's is fiery and he brings a sense of discipline that aides and advisers hope can bridge that gap. He said no one listened to him against going to war in Iraq because he was a businessman at the time, not mentioning that Pence, who was a congressman at the time, voted to authorize the war and was a co-sponsor of the war resolution.
Trump tried to draw a sharp contrast between Pence, a soft-spoken conservative, and Hillary Clinton, the Democratic presidential candidate. The rumors were that he was still deciding between New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, Newt Gingrich, and Pence.
"She got away with murder, in fact, I think it may be her greatest accomplishment: escaping the recent scandal", he later said.
He said in Pence he found a leader to help deliver a prosperous society for all Americans, and that the Republican governor was his "first choice". Ted Cruz. Good guy. "I come to this moment deeply humbled but with a grateful heart", he said, "Grateful to God for his fantastic grace".
