Carlson went public with her claims of Ailes's smarmy behavior in a lawsuit filed against Fox News earlier this year.
Ailes' future with Fox News has been a major topic of conversation at the Republican National Convention, according to a report from the Washington Post.
The case against Roger Ailes took an even darker turn Tuesday when a report surfaced that Kelly told investigators Ailes made unwanted sexual advances toward her about 10 years ago, when she was a legal correspondent for Fox's Washington bureau and a frequent guest on Bill O'Reilly's nightly show, sources told NY magazine.
Fox News star Kelly - who famously grilled Trump during a debate on his use of terms like "dogs" and "fat pigs" to refer to women - told Fox probers investigating sex harassment accusations against Ailes that the CEO had harassed her 10 years ago, NY magazine reported.
While most Fox News Channel female staffers lined up to support Ailes, one didn't: Megyn Kelly.
She alleges that Ailes repeatedly ogled her and commented on her body and that she was punished professionally for refusing Ailes' advances.
Susan Estrich's statement came amid a swirl of contradictory reports that Ailes had been ousted as head of the influential network he built from scratch, that he hadn't been ousted, and that he was negotiating a departure. Fox hired the law firm of Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison to conduct an internal investigation.
"I've heard Roger say, 'I want you to tell everybody to be professional about this, '" Estrich said. She told The Hollywood Reporter "Roger has spent the last 10 years helping Megyn Kelly become the star that she is".
The Daily Beast and Grove walked back the story, which comes as the Fox News chairman and CEO faces a lawsuit that accuses him of sexual harassment. The network provides about 20% of 21st Century Fox's profit and is used by the company as a club in broader channel-carriage negotiations with pay- TV providers.
The emphasis on a conservative point of view - one similar to Ailes's and Rupert Murdoch's own views - also helped Fox differentiate itself from its cable competition. He has also defended her repeatedly against Donald Trump's vicious, repeated sexist attacks past year. Carlson said Doocy was treating her in a "sexist and condescending manner". That had given Ailes power in some corporate scrapes he had with Rupert Murdoch's sons. Ailes has denied the allegations.
BRET BAIER: Meanwhile, a developing media story about this channel - Fox News Channel and our parent company, 21st Century Fox.
Ailes' ability to transform personalities worked on Fox News as well. But the claims by Ms. Carlson and the resulting frenzy in the media world have forced them to make a hard calculation about Mr. Ailes's future.
Ailes said the allegations were untrue and defamatory.
Variety's Cynthia Littleton was able to ask 7 p.m. host Greta Van Susteren about Ailes' status during Monday's convention coverage, and the host said she "doesn't know anything".
But as scrutiny over Ailes increased in recent days, Murdoch and his sons, James and Lachlan, came to agree that he should leave the company, according to NY magazine.
"Roger is at work", the statement said.
