If Hillary Clinton wins the presidential election, Minnesota would claim its third vice president, however tenuous Tim Kaine's ties to the state are.
Hillary Clinton named Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia to be her running mate.
Kaine - a Virginia senator and former governor - got the nod from Clinton in a telephone call Friday evening - days before the party convention begins in Philadelphia. She said she's bothered by Kaine's association with the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a global trade pact that Sanders and Clinton oppose.
Democrats offered a different assessment, with Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta arguing that Trump "offered no real solutions to help working families get ahead or to keep our country safe, just more prejudice and paranoia. Can't wait to hit the trail tomorrow in Miami", Kaine said on Twitter.
And Labor Secretary Tom Perez told CNN that Kaine is "a great man".
McAuliffe declined to say whom he would pick to replace Kaine, but said that having a minority or female candidate represent the state is a significant consideration. He supports restricting the sale of magazines carrying more than 10 bullets; Clinton wants to ban military-style guns she calls "weapons of war".
Clinton has faced her own struggle unifying Democrats and winning over liberal backers of Democratic primary rival Bernie Sanders, a USA senator from Vermont.
"The center of gravity in the Democratic Party has shifted in a bold, populist, progressive direction, regardless of who is selected by Hillary Clinton as Vice President", the group statement said.
Notably, a campaign aide said Kaine made clear "in the course of discussions" that he shares Clinton's opposition to TPP in its current form. To date, he has never lost an election.
Clinton and Kaine are expected to appear together this weekend in South Florida.
As a member of the Armed Services and Foreign Relations committees, Kaine also further adds to the Democratic ticket's national security credentials, which could already tout Clinton's tenure as secretary of State.
Kaine, who hails from a swing state, was long considered a top pick for the job. "You could sit next to him on a cross-country flight, and he would never tell you that he was a Virginia governor or a USA senator".
The bilingual Kaine may prove to be a valuable asset in Spanish-language media as the campaign appeals to Hispanic-Americans turned off by Republican Donald Trump's harsh rhetoric about immigrants.
The 58-year-old is a former housing lawyer who took off time from law school to work with Jesuit missionaries in Honduras, during which he became fluent in Spanish. Whether serving as mayor of Richmond, Virginia's lieutenant governor, governor, and now as USA senator, Tim has always shown a commitment to serving others.
Kaine has no problem with critics calling him boring.
Before being elected to the Senate, Kaine served as governor of Virginia. According to the Washington Post, during this eight year span Kaine received gifts totaling $201,000 in value, including basketball tickets and free clothes.
Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, right, listens as Sen.
David Botkins, a Dominion spokesman, said Kaine "has supported the development of affordable, cleaner energy sources in Virginia and throughout the United States". It used to be solidly Republican, but President Obama won in 2008 and 2012.
