"Do you want a you're fired president or a you're hired president?" asked Kaine.
Kaine, 58, is a welder's son and grew up in Kansan City where his father owned a small metalworking shop.
Clinton and Kaine appeared at Florida International University in Miami. "We can't afford to let him do the same thing to our country".
"I alone can fix it. he's not only wrong, he's dangerously wrong", she said. "What a novel concept". "I see it. I understand it", she said.
The two would be formally accepting the nomination at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia this week. Kaine is everything Trump and Pence are not. Sherrod Brown were among the more progressive leaders in the Democratic Party who were being considered for the job that ultimately went to Kaine.
JEFF GREENFIELD: Yes, I think- I think part of what they were trying to communicate was this is a comfortable two-some.
He also spoke of his Catholic mission to Honduras, where he helped teenagers with carpentry and welding - and learned to speak Spanish.
Kaine, a former governor, has "devoted his life to fighting for others", Clinton's announcement said. "Wonderful, very experienced, an innovator", said Sweeney who was in the crowd.
The Trump campaign attacked Clinton's choice of running mate, dubbing the Virginia Senator "Corrupt Kaine". "He has a lot of ties there, a lot of experience and it may as well swing the state for her", Freeman said.
Tick Segerblom had backed Bernie Sanders but was enthusiastic about the news announced via text message on Friday.
"Tim Kaine has been praising the Trans Pacific Partnership and has been pushing hard to get it approved". Kaine's Senate spokeswoman confirmed on Saturday his opposition to the pact. "The nation should not send USA service members into harm's way unless there is a consensus among the civilian leadership - executive and legislative - that the mission is worth it. Ordering people to risk their lives without Washington doing the work necessary to reach a political consensus is immoral".
Clinton tried to reassure party liberals, offering an extended list of Kaine's efforts on behalf of low-income workers, education and civil rights, and for expanded gun control laws and immigration reform.
Sanders supporter Angie Morelli called Kaine "a awful pick" and said it showed Clinton wanted to reach more conservative voters rather than bring more Sanders supporters into the fold. Sanders had complained about the superdelegates, which overwhelmingly backed Clinton.
