UPDATE 7/19/16 4:15 PM: Donald Trump is the Republican Party's nominee for President of the United States. Earlier Tuesday, Speaker of the House Paul Ryan spoke to the crowd at the convention, invigorating the North Carolina delegation. "Against the dreary backdrop of arrogant bureaucracies, pointless mandates, reckless borrowing, willfull retreat from the world and all that progressives have in store for us", Ryan said.
"Whatever we lack going into this campaign", Ryan said in his speech Tuesday night, "we should not lack for motivation".
Ryan's embrace of Trump, with whom he has publicly differed even as he supports him, was reluctant at best.
Let's try one more time: "In the plainest terms I know, it is all on the line". "Only with Donald Trump and Mike Pence do we have a chance at a better way".
House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wisconsin, urged his party to unite against Hillary Clinton, downplaying the intra-party disputes of the GOP primary process as "signs of life", but mentioning Trump only twice in his prime-time address.
"For a country so ready for change, it feels like we've been cleared for takeoff, and then somebody announced we're all going back to the gate", Ryan said.
But that's where Ryan's praise for Trump ends.
But with 23 percent of registered republican voters in Monterey County, some side with Trump.
"Their most important goal right now is protecting the House and Senate", Kyle C. Kopko, a political science professor at Elizabethtown College said.
The chair of the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, whose remarks were preceded by UFC President Dana White, wanted to stress the GOP's need to unify around its chosen candidate ahead of the general elections.
Not only did Ryan ignore the progress of the past eight years - unemployment rate down, weekly earnings up, undocumented immigrant population down, stock market up, trade deficit down, corporate profits up, etc. - but he made some particularly rich statements, given the man he now supports for president.
