American Jimmy Walker claimed the lead after the opening round of the US PGA Championship as England's Ross Fisher and Andy Sullivan increased the prospects of a clean sweep for first-time major winners in 2016.
He was a 21-year-old about to enter his senior year at Baylor when he played Baltusrol in the 2000 U.S. Amateur. It's good on the putting green.
In all, Johnson beat five players, three of them club pros, and pretty much played his way out of contention while paired with British Open champ Henrik Stenson (3-under 67) and Masters victor Danny Willett (1 over). "You've just got to keep plugging along". Jason Day made it look pretty easy on Thursday, though, with a 2-under 68 in the first round of the PGA Championship at Baltusrol.
Day's score could have been better as he was not able to capitalise on numerous chances he gave himself on the greens with a conservative approach that had him hitting many three woods off the tee rather than cutting loose with the driver.
The Swede can boast a long list of honours from his illustrious career, but slipped down to 207 in the world rankings in 2011 after suffering a serious loss of form.
"I haven't won this tournament from this position before, so I'll need a low one tomorrow", McIlroy said.
Starting on the back nine alongside defending champion Jason Day and Open runner-up Phil Mickelson, McIlroy missed from 10 feet for birdie on the 10th and even closer range on the 11th, before saving par from a greenside bunker on the next.
Then there was terrible.
Instead, after two pars to start, Johnson double bogeyed the third hole, and never recovered.
McIlroy missed a 10-foot birdie putt on hole No. 10, his opening hole of the tournament at Baltusrol.
Ahead of them all was Walker, who only began regularly qualifying for majors in 2014.
There was to be no challenging 62 like at Royal Troon.
"Here, you have to be patient, take your opportunities when you can and work yourself up to the lead come Sunday", Day said.
The season has been a struggle for Walker. He tied for fourth in the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines, but has only one top-10 since.
"This guy's going to make more than a thousand bucks doing this", Rosenbaum said. "I have been cranking away and busting it. It just hasn't showed, which kind of happens sometimes".
Fowler's season has been almost as frustrating. He had a great early run of four top-10s that included a playoff loss to Hideki Matsuyama in the Phoenix Open.
"But it seems like as soon as we made the turn, the wind got up a little bit more and the greens started to get a little bit more baked out". I feel like it's definitely heading in the right direction.
"Swing-wise, everything is fundamentals".
"I need to be more aggressive and shoot something in the mid-60s and get into the weekend".
Grillo had a chance to at least join Walker in the lead when he was at 4 under with the final two holes par 5s.
Hend, a native of Australia who plays on the European Tour, birdied Nos. And finally getting his first major did little to make him satisfied. When you have his ability to hit the ball as far as he does and as straight as he does, he can overpower any golf course.
