The medal was a reward for an Olympic tournament that got off to a rocky start.

Umar Sadiq delivered the first goal in the 34th minute of the game followed by Aminu Umar's 49th minute strike. He now serve as Information Technology Officer with Africa's Largest TV Network.

BELO HORIZONTE, Brazil (AP) - Sadiq Umar scored a pair of goals and Nigeria won the Olympic bronze medal by holding off Honduras 3-2 on Saturday at Mineirao Stadium.

Honduras tried to claw their way back, cutting down the lead after they scored two goals but Nigeria held tight and managed to seal the victory. Honduras should be proud of what they accomplished to get this far themselves, though they would certainly much rather be celebrating their first-ever Olympics medal in football.

Nigeria are favourites heading into their clash with Honduras in the men's football bronze medal match. The team fell to Argentina in the final at the 2008 Beijing Games for the silver.

While Honduras have done exceptionally well to reach this stage of the competition, they were hammered 6-0 by home nation Brazil in the last round.

Honduras managed to reduce the deficit in the 70th minute when Anthony Lozano clinically slotted past Akpeyi from close range.

Four minutes into the second half, Aminu Umar extended Nigeria's lead when Mikel's shot was blocked by Lopez to gift the scorer a free ball.

Honduras started seeing a bit more of the ball as the half went on and could have taken the lead after 23 minutes, but Daniel Akpeyi produced a fine save to keep out Rommen Quioto from distance.
