Ronaldo voted UEFA's 2015-16 Best Player in Europe

"It means that I'm on the right track to be among the best".

"It was the pinnacle of a hard season for Real Madrid in which we were ultimately able to win the biggest trophy in club football".

The Portuguese sat out Madrid's first game of the La Liga season on Sunday, as he continues his recuperation following the problem he suffered in the final of UEFA European Championship this summer.

"Unfortunately, we didn't win a trophy and it was a blow for us, as well for our fans".

As Ronaldo basked in his glory, Griezmann was left to reflect on another near miss, having also been on the losing side against the Portugal star in both the Champions League and Euros finals.

"Of course, I feel happy because it was an unbelievable season", Ronaldo said.

Ronaldo is also set to sign a new deal that will see him remain at Real Madrid until the age of 36. After winning the Champions League, winning the European Championship with my country capped an extraordinary year for me.

Cardiff-born Galactico Bale has already won Europe's elite competition twice in the three years since signing from Tottenham in a world record move, most recently in May when Real beat neighbours Atletico on penalties in an all-Madrid final. According to most estimates, Ronaldo would win the award due to his achievements this season but that takes nothing away from Griezmann who has emerged as one of the best players in Europe over the past two or so seasons.

These have been the three best players in Europe helping their teams and country's to higher heights but the can be only one victor. You don't just get these individual awards on your own, you get them through playing for your team and to be nominated is incredible.

Asked what his biggest dream as a kid was, Ronaldo said: "It was to be a football player and have success in football".

"I have to give a big thanks to all my team-mates at worldwide and club levels. Maybe I deserve to win the award".
