Conor McGregor Fined for Throwing Water Bottle During UFC 202 Press Conference

McGregor and Diaz were involved in the melee at a testy press conference in Las Vegas three days before the fight.

Conor McGregor has received a $150,000 (€135,000) fine and been ordered to serve 50 hours of community service for his part in an altercation at a UFC 202 press conference, writes Stephen Barry.

The press conference was quite the spectacle, as McGregor showed up late and Diaz ended up leaving early, but not before the two started shouting swears at each other and hurling water bottles. "This was the highest stakes fights I've ever been in".

McGregor, who was not physically present at the hearing, but was there by phone, was extremely remorseful in the role he played in the incident.

The matter led to the NAC adjudicating disciplinary action against McGregor and Diaz.

"I just want to apologize for the incident, "McGregor said, according to MMA Fighting".

"This fight had everything on the line for me", he said.

McGregor, who holds the UFC featherweight title, will challenge lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez in the promotion's debut show in NY on November 12.

The commission insisted that McGregor makes a PSA about anti-bullying for the state of Nevada.

Still, fining a fighter 5 percent of his fight purse for throwing a water bottle sets a steep precedent for the future.

McGregor is also required to perform 50 hours of community service, double the recommendation of the commission's legal representative.

McGregor is also required to reimburse the athletic commission for its expenses in adjudicating his case.
