Bermuda has been placed on hurricane warning as the storm will bring strong gusts, eight foot tall storm surges and coastal flooding.
The National Hurricane Center called the storm "extremely risky", with maximum sustained winds of 125 mph and a wide path that whips everything within 65 miles of its center with hurricane force winds. NASA's Aqua satellite captured a visible image of Nicole as it was approaching the island.
How does Hurricane Nicole compare to Hurricane Matthew? The video shows crew members flying in very turbulent conditions into the center of the storm, which spun dangerously close to Florida's Atlantic coast Friday morning, scraping the shore with howling wind and heavy rain and that left more than 400,000 without power.
Going further back in time, a hurricane in 1939 had winds strengths of 130 miles per hour and passed within about 80 km of the Bermuda coast.
Nicole is expected to produce up to 8 inches of rain over Bermuda through this evening. However, forecasters warned that it was still extremely risky.
At 1200 GMT, Nicole was about 55 miles (85 kilometers) southwest of Bermuda barreling toward the northeast at around 15 miles (24 kilometers) per hour.
The brunt of Nicole is forecast to pass through the North Atlantic island Thursday morning through around midday, and by this afternoon the worst in Bermuda is expected to have passed.
The government had closed schools and government offices on Wednesday as businesses boarded up.
"We were hopeful that it would come across so we could at least get a break", he said in a phone interview.
"I believe we are generally ready for it", Premier Michael Dunkley said, according to NBC News.
American Airlines and Air Canada are among several that have cancelled flights to the island, and several cruise ships have called off trips as well.
A tropical depression has formed to the east of the Philippines and is expected to become a tropical storm later today.
"There is a pump system for water on the island so we needed to make sure we had plenty of water if there was a problem".
Isolated tornadoes are also possible from Nicole, and the Royal Gazette reported some islanders said they witnessed small twisters.
