This was Arkansas' first win against Florida since joining the Southeastern Conference in 1991.
Tennessee fans had more reason to be optimistic Monday when Arkansas coach Bret Bielema delivered an update on quarterback Austin Allen, who sprained a knee against Auburn on October 22.
"First and foremost for the guys who made the trip down here, I apologize you had to sit through that", Florida coach Jim McElwain said. "They came out with something to prove and they proved it". The line was not opening giant gaps for the run but they are coming along. It looked like the game might be getting out of hand then, but Florida's defense stepped up. They suffered an embarrassing loss at Auburn 56-3 in their last game, and they'll be looking to redeem that performance on Saturday. Those totals are surprising for a unit that returned nine starters this fall and had All-SEC players at each level.
"I think the playoff committee is right putting them both in there because they're probably two of the best four teams in the country". "That's what I needed to do". He was an excellent host with a really good team. If the defense continues to perform at the level it has in recent weeks, the Gators can keep the noise to a minimum. Mayo's goal was the Razorbacks' fastest score of the season, surpassing Stefani Doyle's score during the 10 minute against James Madison in the season opener.
"To come out of that game and realize we couldn't stop the run, I just said, 'I don't care what we do, we're going to stop the run on defense, '" Bielema said. "I'm not saying anything bad about Florida".
Arkansas quarterback Austin Allen has played well so far this season, but he has taken a beating from the offensive line not blocking effectively, which should have the Florida defense licking their chops.
With that in mind, I will go ahead and sound the upset alert for the Gators.
The Razorbacks finished with 223 yards rushing overall, a marked improvement after totaling 25 yards on 31 carries in the loss to Auburn two weeks ago.
"They're definitely a great defense", Williams said. "And that's kind of what we're doing". But we're a great team. It was a wild encounter with the Gators, who ultimately advanced to play top-seeded SC with a win decided by penalty kicks. Freshman Devwah Whaley added another 69 yards on 12 carries. There are tangible goals in front them. McElwain said the position will be reevaluated going forward, but that's no different than any other position.
"Ran the whole time with the ones". Florida cornerback Duke Dawson, Jr. read Allen's quick out, returning an interception 37 yards for a score to cut the lead 14-7. He finished with 148 yards on the ground.
355 Consecutive games have been played by Florida since it was most recently shut out, the longest scoring streak in SEC history. He's averaged under 200 yards per game, while barely completing 50 percent of his passes in those two contests as well. "You know as Florida Gators, it is our responsibility to get it closer". Bielema went into Miami to poach Alex Collins away from the hometown Hurricanes and turned him into a running back with back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons.
The Razorbacks were also able to gain yards on the ground when they had the ball. Cleveland bobbled it, and it bounced into the arms of Arkansas defender Santos Ramirez, whose legs swiftly put Florida in its first 7-0 hole of 2016.
