The No. 1 overall pick in April's National Football League draft will make his first start for the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday at home against the Miami Dolphins, a person familiar with the move told USA TODAY Sports' Tom Pelissero.
Finally, on Tuesday, Coach Jeff Fisher tabbed Goff as the starting quarterback, replacing Case Keenum. The team's scoring offense is dead last in the NFL and their passing game is ranked 25 in the league with 225.4 yards per game.
Rams players said they respected Keenum but would rally behind Goff, who could provide a spark to the offense.
Fisher said that Keenum will continue to be a team captain, but that as it relates to the actual quarterback job, "I$3 t's time". "To be the quarterback, to be the guy with the ball in his hands". It takes time, and we gave it time, and it was the right decision.
Goff started three seasons at Cal, throwing 96 touchdowns and 30 interceptions for a team that made just one bowl appearance during his tenure.
Goff struggled in the preseason, completing only 44.9 percent of his passes (22 for 49), with two TDs and two interceptions for a 55.8 passer rating.
Based on NFL standing, Goff was a first pick 2016 NFL Draft and his performance is getting better.
On top of that, the blame on Goff not being ready falls squarely on Fisher's shoulders, as well as quarterbacks coach Chris Weinke, whose last job was as the head coach of a high school team. It also marked the third time in nine games that the Rams didn't reach the endzone. Goff, out of California, has been a perplexing clipboard-holder all along, especially in a season in which rookie quarterbacks have soared. ABOUT THE RAMS (4-5): One man's opportunity led to another's misery as Keenam approached the podium on Wednesday with a frown and told reporters he "wasn't happy" with coach Jeff Fisher's decision.
"Very excited", Goff said when asked to describe his emotions after meeting with Fisher.
Rams fans chanted "We want Goff!" two weeks ago during a loss to the Panthers. They're only a game below.500, with a record of 4-5, despite Keenum being the NFL's 30th-rated passer. Goff has yet to see a single regular season snap, while fellow rookie QB's Carson Wentz, Dak Prescott, Paxton Lynch, Cody Kessler, Jacoby Brisset, Kevin Hogan, and Trevone Boykin have all seen playing time. "At this point, he's at the reins, so I just say, 'Let it go, don't be afraid to do what you did to get drafted". Right tackle Rob Havenstein said Goff's behind-the-scenes work with the playbook was starting to show up on the field.
Goff was drafted number one overall in last April's NFL Draft.
Fisher said the offense would not be scaled down for Goff.
"I don't go into games having concerns".
He said that they are not working on particular things but rather they are looking in to different variables in the game.
