The incident took place at around 3am near Pukhrayan, about 100 kms from Kanpur. Most of the passengers were jolted out of their sleep to find themselves among mangled remains of the bogies.
While 63 people have died in the incident, those injured have been admitted to hospitals across Kanpur, where the conditions of many are said to be serious, the official said, adding that the death toll could go up later in the day. All hospitals have been asked to be alert.
"At least 20 bodies have been recovered so far", Zaki Ahmed, inspector general of Kanpur police, told news agency ANI. Doctors and senior railway officials are at the scene.
India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi also took to social media to issue a public statement. "My thoughts are with the bereaved families", he wrote.
Mr Modi said he had spoken to Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu, who was "personally monitoring the situation closely".
Moreover, it is being reported that several people are still stuck in the derailed train and the District administration together with railway officials are doing their best to pull the passengers out.
Rescue workers at the site were using heavy machinery to cut through the carriages to reach survivors. All medical and other help rushed. So are the minister of state for railways, the local member of Parliament and state legislators.
Most of the victims were located in two carriages near the engine which overturned and were badly damaged, reports said.
"A lot of teams are now there including local police, doctors and members of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF)". Several trains scheduled to take the same route were diverted, following the accident.
Prabhu also tweeted the helpline numbers put out by the Railways.
Three NDRF teams have been rushed from Varanasi and Lucknow to the accident spot.
It was not immediately clear was caused the coaches to derail. However, the exact reason would be known only after an inquiry.
