1 worker hurt in explosion at Kansas chemical plant

A Neodesha Fire Department employee said the the fire began at around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday. Residents also were asked not to drink city water.

Water helped contain the fire, but the foam appeared to have the most impact knocking it down.

"We will continue to work to bring this to a conclusion", Johnson said. Emergency management crews had requested additional tankers from neighboring areas and Neodesha was placed under a boil water order.

The plant, about 100 miles southeast of Wichita, manufactures and packages aerosol, liquid and other specialty chemicals. That injury was the only one reported as of 10:45 a.m., Cassandra Edson, public information officer of Wilson County Emergency Management said.

A spokesperson with the Wilson County Sheriff's Office was not immediately available for comment.

They have a command center set up at Heller Elementary.

The cause of the explosion has not yet been determined as crews are still working to put out the blaze.

A 57-year-old male employee was taken to a hospital with burns.

School is cancelled in Neodesha and they are evacuating residents in the immediate area. Today, the company says it has more than 40 full-time workers and remains headquartered in Neodesha.

Robert Lopez lives only three blocks from the explosion.

"We were all pretty scared", he said. Neodesha is located in Wilson County in far southeast Kansas.
