TCU coach Gary Patterson said he ignored the emotions that were bubbling on the Texas sideline.
It was a mutually beneficial partnership that propelled Herman from Broyles Award victor to $5 million man in two short years, while ultimately reaffirming that with the proper staff in place, Houston can be a big-time program.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) Tom Herman now gets his chance for a Texas takeover.
After Charlie Strong was officially fired, Tom Herman was hired to serve as the new coach of the Texas Longhorns.
"I want to thank the University of Houston, the administration, the fans and especially the players for an unbelievable two years", Herman said.
Tuesday morning, Houston Board of Regents chairman Tilman Fertitta sounded off on Texas' hiring of Herman as well as the Big 12's decision not to expand when UH was considered to be a prime candidate to join the conference. Texas still owes Strong almost $11 million on his original five-year guaranteed contract.
Texas moved quickly to snag Herman, who has spent the past two seasons with the Cougars and elevated the program into to the Top 25. The coach coined the phrase "H-Town Takeover" in a bid to energize the local fan base and keep Houston-area recruits at home.
The former Ohio State University offensive coordinator arrived in Houston and in one scintillating season, he vaulted the Houston Cougars to national prominence. From 1999-2000, he was a graduate assistant for the Longhorns, and this position propelled him to become a wide receiver and special teams coach for Sam Houston State for three years. In 2 seasons he lead the Cougars to a 22-4 record and a Peach Bowl victory over Florida State. After more of the same this season, the Texas Longhorns decided it was time to move in a different direction and relieve Strong of his head coaching duties.
Houston Vice President for Athletics Hunter Yurachek issued a statement confirming Herman's departure.
Houston named defensive coordinator Todd Orlando as interim coach.
"The opportunity to come back to Texas is a dream come true for me and my family, and I can't thank President (Gregory) Fenves and Mike Perrin enough for providing me with this incredible opportunity", Herman said, via Texas' team website. Herman now turns his sights to the Texas Longhorns.
Strong replaced longtime Texas coach Mack Brown in January 2014 after rebuilding Louisville, where he went 23-3 in his final two seasons. Strong had a 16-21 record in three seasons with the Longhorns.
Herman vowed that Texas will have the best-trained team in America and the most physically and mentally tough team on the field, and he's excited to begin recruiting for the program.
Herman said he met with Fenves and Texas athletic director Mike Perrin well in the pre-dawn hours Saturday to reach an agreement. "I hope they all do well, but I just hope we do better". "I am impressed with his insights on college sports, football and academic success, and his philosophy of developing the student-athlete into a complete person".
