Prior to Michel Aoun's emegernce in October, Lebanon had been without a president since 2014 when Suleiman Michel stepped down in May upon the expiration of his tenure. Hariri said preserving the "stability that is prevailing in Lebanon amid fires that are prevailing around the region" will be "at the top of its list of priorities".
Yacoub al-Sarraf, a political ally to Aoun, will be the new defense minister, while the important post of energy and water minister will go to Cesar Abou Khalil. Moreover, new posts such as anti-corruption minister and minister of state for women have been added to the government.
But there's a catch: Lebanon's first minister for women is a man.
The Phalangist party declined an invitation to be involved in the 30-minister government and is the only main political group that will not be involved in running the country. Lebanon's political system ensures parity between Muslim and Christian representatives.
The new cabinet, which was announced on state television on Sunday evening, will keep Gebran Bassil as foreign minister, Ali Hassan Khalil as finance minister and Nouhad Machnouk as interior minister.
Hariri's father was Lebanese prime minister Rafik Hariri, whose 2005 assassination was blamed on Hezbollah.
"The United States reaffirms its strong support for Lebanon's security, stability, and sovereignty and looks forward to working with the new Lebanese government", the statement read.
He said it is also "an elections government" as parliamentary polls are to be organized in mid 2017.
