The new QX50 SUV will rival the likes of the Lexus NX, Audi Q5 and BMW X3 and sit above the Mercedes-Benz GLA-based QX30 in Infiniti's line-up.
The new technology is created to improve on-road safety by supporting the driver in identifying and responding to other road users and potential hazards.
In the place of high-gloss woods and soft-touch plastics, the interior of the QX50 Concept features a more modern application of wood, leather and stitching.
"Mitate" relates to the practice of curating and bringing together the best possible selection of materials.
The "driver-centric" and "passenger-minded" layout of the QX50 Concept's cabin is divided into distinct zones for driver and passengers.
That being said, now that the vehicle has made it to the 2017 Detroit Auto Show, Infiniti also released quite a lot of information regarding the concept's interior, which is supposed to demonstrate the company's new direction regarding how they view premium materials and craftsmanship. The concept also previews a new infotainment system and interface that is highlighted by a wide touchscreen.
A strong corporate image is all-important for premium brands and the teaser sketches that Infiniti has released show the marque knows this well. That said, Infiniti's signature design elements are evident on the QX50 Concept, including the double-arch grille in front of the curved bonnet that's "shaped like the rise of a snake's head". The QX50 has headlamps that blend into a character line running most of the length of the auto, which has muscular haunches over all four wheelarches for a powerful look. There's "dot-quilted" leather all around, plus a digital display behind the wheel and two screens on the dashboard.
Infiniti is keen to emphasise that ProPILOT will "act as a "co-pilot" for the driver, empowering rather than replacing them and "delegate" more onerous driving tasks to the car".
The 2.0-litre, variable-compression VC-Turbo engine is claimed to be 27 per cent more efficient than the firm's existing V6 petrol engines.
The presence of VC-Turbo technology in the QX50 concept previews its appearance in the version that makes it to market - Infiniti states that this engine technology is production-ready. Infiniti is quick to point out that its system will take a proactive approach to autonomous driving that focuses on safety so that a driver always retains most of the control. Examples of where the auto will assist are in dealing with stop-start motorway congestion and keeping track of the positions of other vehicles immediately surrounding the auto.
Simply put, the compression ratio refers to how much a piston compresses the air/fuel mixture in an engine's cylinder.
