Voters Could Replace All the Original Monopoly Tokens With Emoji

Called the Monopoly Token Madness Vote, you can now pick among 50-plus choices what tokens are packaged in Monopoly. Eight new golden tokens included in the vote have already joined the existing tokens in a Monopoly Token Madness edition of the game.

The current roster of tokens consists of a top hat, thimble, battleship, shoe, Scottie dog, car, wheelbarrow, and cat (who was only added in 2013 when a vote replaced the iron with it).

"Among the new tokens are some decidedly 21st century options, including a cellphone, "#" (aka, the symbol used to denote a hashtag), aviator sunglasses and several variations of smiley-face emojis. Jazzy music plays in the background as you explore and take a closer look at the figurines.

Hasbro is offering up a number of tokens that may appeal to tech consumers.

Some of the non-emoji options include a computer, rubber duck, a flip-flop, sliced bread, and a weirdly over-detailed T. Rex. The game is created to rake in a new generation of consumers to the board game in a time and place where video games and other digital forms of entertainment are dominating the gaming industry. The winning tokens will be announced on World Monopoly Day, March 19, and the fan-picked tokens will be updated in the Monopoly game hitting shelves this August.
