Russia's healthcare ministry offers help to Hungarians injured in Italy road accident

The impact of the crash just before midnight was so violent that the overpass support column actually entered into the bus, officials said. Of the 39 survivors, 26 were injured, some seriously.

Most of the passengers were students from a Budapest high school returning from a ski trip in France.

Verona traffic police chief Girolamo Lacquaniti had said Saturday that no other vehicle was involved, which suggested mechanical or human error was the cause.

The accident happened in the Verona Province, where a bus on the way from France to Hungary smashed into a pole and caught fire.

"Police were awaiting the go-ahead from the prosecutor to analyse the wreckage", Agi said. It cited him telling SkyTG 24 television that the bus left the road near a highway exit, where it struck a pylon, and caught fire.

The bus driver, who is a French citizen, may be among the victims of the crash.

Forty people were reportedly injured, with 10 of them having sustained very serious injuries and are still receiving treatment in two hospitals in Verona city.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto told reporters in Budapest: "One passenger is now in an induced coma and in life-threatening condition".

The teenagers all came from a secondary school in the Hungarian capital of Budapest, Szijjarto told reporters. But the driver didn't react quickly enough, RAI said.

Investigators have found no brake marks at the scene, he said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his condolences and sympathy to the victims and their families.
