Emmanuelle Riva, Oscar-Nominated Star of 'Amour,' Dies at 89

French actress Emmanuelle Riva, who was nominated for an Oscar for her performance in 2012's Amour, has died aged 89.

Along with her moving portrayal of one half of an elderly couple in "Amour" - which won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film - Riva was also closely identified with her performance in the Alain Resnais-directed classic "Hiroshima Monday amour" (1959).

Her career was effectively bookended by her first and last Cannes appearances for her lead roles in Hiroshima Monday amour in 1959, and Amour in 2012.

Riva was well known in France before Amour brought her worldwide acclaim. She played an elderly music teacher being cared for by her husband Georges, as played by Jean-Louis Trintignant, and at the age of 85, she became the oldest nominee for the Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role.

Riva never married and had no children. Hiroshima Monday amour, which premiered in Cannes in 1959 and received an Oscar nomination in 1961, would propel Riva into the spotlight, while Resnais - along with contemporaries Claude Chabrol, Francois Truffaut and Jean-Luc Godard - would become part of a New Wave that would change the course of movie history.

Riva is perhaps best known to American audiences for Amour, the 2012 film from writer-director Michael Haneke.

Riva had a steady stream of gigs until last summer (16), when she made a film, Alma, in Iceland.

The actress reflected on her career at the time, saying that while she hoped to continue acting, she wouldn't be concerned if she didn't make another movie.
