American basketball players stranded in Middle East amid bans

The ban is in retaliation to Donald Trump's executive order that prevents refugees and citizens from seven Muslim-majority countries - including Iran - from entering the U.S.

Prince, 29, and fellow American Joseph Jones, 30, who played at Texas A&M, are teammates on the Azad University Tehran team in Iran's Super League.

Iran's ban of US citizens was in retaliation to President Donald Trump's executive order barring refugees and citizens from seven Muslim-majority countries - including Iran - from entering the United States.

Prince, who played three seasons for the Volunteers (2007-10) after he transferred from Arizona, now plays professional basketball for a team in Iran.

Agent Eric Fleisher said Monday that team officials are working to renew the visas for Prince and Jones, who are under contract through the rest of the season. Before Jones and Prince could return to the country, Iran implemented its own ban.

Both players are in their first season in the Iran Super League.

Fleisher told WBIR the team's efforts to voice their concern to the Iranian government on the player's behalf has been unsuccessful. Secondarily, all their things are in Iran.

All their items are in Iran and they will be losing "a bunch of money" because they can't return to play for the university until further notice, he added. They can't go back and get them.

Fleisher said that the Jones and Prince have had "very positive" experiences in Iran until now.

Jones played at Texas A&M from 2004 to 2008, while Prince spent five years from 2005 to 2010 playing college basketball at Arizona and later Tennessee.
