The big news is that the hauler loses 136 kilograms thanks to a lighter aluminum body - the first of its kind on an SUV.
It offers space for a driver plus seven passengers without sacrificing cargo space, but with the push of a button the second and third row of seats fold flat so that the Expedition can serve as a true load lugger. The brand-new model will make its public debut later this week during the Chicago Auto Show. Nissan just redesigned the Armada, Infiniti the QX80, and Toyota is expected to redesign the Sequoia.
It also has collision avoidance, blind spot alerts-more than 40 convenience and driver-assist technologies.
The Expedition, available in XLT, XL, Limited and Platinum series, is being built at the Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville.
The tandem has been slightly decreasing entering 2017, both vehicle manufacturers were down following the USA auto sales with a total of 3% percent decline in January. That's up from 33 percent in 2009, with millennials and baby boomers driving the shift from cars to utilities, said Michael O'Brien, Ford SUV group marketing manager. The latter suggests that the Ford Fiesta Active, a crossover variant revealed in late November, will be making the leap to the United States within the next three years. The Ford Expedition and long-wheelbase Ford Expedition Max will go on sale in the fall of 2017.
The new aluminum sheetmetal gives the Expeditions a slightly more massive look than the current models, with a slightly higher beltline and a strong character line running from the head- to the taillights. Stop start for the engine is standard and customers can choose 2WD or AWD with a low-range transfer case. Executives are not talking about hybrid or diesel options at this point, but those are powertrains offered or planned for the F-150.
The 2018 Ford Expedition has been made bigger not just in appearance but also in terms of making its passengers more comfortable. The automaker says 50% of all Expedition buyers value towing, and 15% tow at least monthly.
Speaking of technology, the 2018 Ford Expedition has everything the F-150 sports.
Visually, the beltline is higher. The new design is complete with a new front end and a larger, more defined, rear finish. The headlamps are nicely integrated into the grille.
Another intelligent touch comes in the folding mechanism for the second row of seats - even when a child seat has been fitted, this row can tilt and slide forward to allow access to the seats behind. The second row of seats not only slide, but they also feature a tip-and-slide function that gives wide access to the rear seats - you can even activate this feature with a auto seat installed (without a baby in it, of course). That third row isn't teeny, either: The seatbacks recline, and at 5 feet 10 your author had a few inches of extra room before bouncing into the ceiling.
The cargo area is big enough to fit a 4 feet by 8 feet sheet of plywood.
