He will be back in court next Wednesday. Arroyo was a 44-year-old mother of five and a 14-year veteran of the FDNY. While they were attending to the matter, Gonzalez, allegedly under the influence of drugs, climbed into their ambulance with intent to steal it.
A nearby woman, Nancy Montavo, told the Daily News that the second paramedic was devastated. "I didn't do nothing".
The other EMT was in the passenger seat of the ambulance as it was being stolen. Williams was treated for minor injuries sustained during her struggle with the carjacker and released. She was killed when the suspect put the vehicle in reverse and ran over her.
"They got out to see what has happening", Nigro said.
"The vehicle ran over her, and you could see it hop", said music producer SwavyJayBeats, who was being driven home when he started videotaping the runaway ambulance.
The ambulance then crashed into several parked cars and got stuck on a snowbank.
It's a sad night for everyone in the department. "This person had no business being in this ambulance", Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro said.
Arroyo, however, died at her station house while waiting for medical attention. Police officers who arrived on the scene quickly, sympathetically restrained Williams and helped to calm her down after the shocking fatal carjacking. "My prayers go out to her and her family".
"We lost more than a patient advocate".
"We're hurt", said Patrica Red, 50, a lifelong friend who consoled Rosado.
He said the perpetrator needs to spend the rest of his life in prison. "They don't need to be there", he said. He was apprehended by passing MTA K-9 Officer Danny McCabe and a group of good Samaritans.
The suspect apparently floored the gas pedal, backed into Arroyo, and then dragged her 8 to 10 feet forward, according to witnesses.
