After taking care of North Carolina Central in the First Four, the UC Davis Aggies have got a little bit of momentum rolling their way heading into the NCAA Tournament First Round.
DID YOU KNOW: NCCU won its three tournament games by an average of 23 points.
Only twice have the Jayhawks advanced to the Final Four during that span. They have really good habits. He coached at Bradley from 2001 until 2011 and has been at UC Davis since.
The Braves (21-10) led by 14 with 15:38 to go, but let the Jayhawks back in the game with three consecutive turnovers with around the five minutes left. "The main thing we've been talking about coming into this tournament is not to look past anybody because it just takes one loss and it's all over".
"He's always competitive to me", Self said. We got to practice and I found out we weren't even playing today.
"And Davis, it's really interesting because this hasn't happened before so a lot of people - it was very unexpected - but a lot of people are very congratulatory to us". Junior Chima Moneke got the Aggies going, scoring eight of his 18 points during the spurt.
For the past couple of weeks, Self and the Jayhawks have talked about their mindset being a major key to their tournament success.
"I have an easy sell when I sit in a living room of a recruit, because we were living in IL at the time".
The Eagles who average 75.1 points per game are led by senior guards Patrick Cole who averages 19.5 points per game and Dajuan Graf who averages 14.3.
Jackson is able to try to do those things thanks to the end of his one-game suspension, which was announced before the Big 12 tournament after it was revealed he was cited for backing into a auto on campus in February after not reporting the incident to police.
Asked what he learned from his involvement and the aftermath of a December dispute at The Yacht Club with a member of the women's basketball team, Jackson pointed to his evolving maturity. "If I can give them a snapshot of what they're going to experience and so they can kind of mentally prepare so they're not surprised". Certainly there's been some challenges, but I don't think that's going to be a factor in any way, shape or form. I had moments where I thought I was never going to make one again. They also face the largest handicap in the first round, way larger I'd accept in this situation. "I've just been enjoying it every day, taking in what I can and just trying to enjoy every minute of it". I grew up a Michigan State fan watching him. And so it's easy to sit in front of parents and say, you know what, I'm not asking you to do anything that I didn't do.
In North Carolina Central's first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 2014, the Eagles had the ball with 38 seconds remaining in regulation and chance to make history.
"They (Aggies) will be fired up to play", Jackson said. They came in shooting just 29.1 percent from beyond the arc.
The counter to the early Aggie offensive explosion, a switch to a 1-3-1 zone, actually worked in NC Central's favor, as it created turnovers, got out in transition, and changed the game to the Eagles' style of play. So I hope he can get here.
