In 2014, the court dismissed the charges of killing protesters, citing the prosecution for technical flaws, and the ruling earlier this month further absolved him of any accountability and paved the way for his release. The ruling was upheld by another court past year, and Mubarak's release Friday was for time served.

Mubarak, 88, became president in 1981 after Anwar Sadat's assassination.

An Egyptian attorney general ordered on March 13, 2017 the release of former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak after he served his maximum pre-trial detention sentence.

Activists say Mubarak's acquittal in the deaths of the protesters confirmed long-held suspicions that he and scores of police who faced the same charges would never be brought to justice.

Mubarak is not yet completely in the clear: Investigations are set to reopen into whether he illegally received gifts from the state-owned Al-Ahram media organization during his reign.

After initially serving time in Egypt's Tora prison, he was then transferred to more comfortable quarters in a military hospital in the suburb of Maadi. He was accused of conspiring to kill hundreds of protesters during the 2011 Arab Spring uprising in Egypt. "But he's not expected to be taken back into custody unless he's convicted".

"Honestly, I found that all of that was useless", said Ahmed Mohamed, 29.
