The University of Michigan's run in the NCAA Tournament came to an end after a 69-68 loss to OR in a Sweet 16 match-up last night in Kansas City. Everyone talked about North Carolina as the favorite, Villanova as the returning champion, and Gonzaga as the underdog and advanced metrics darling.
- It took about 10 minutes for Kansas guards Frank Mason III and Devonte Graham to slow down, gain their composure and get everything under control in their Midwest Regional semifinal.
Kansas is back in the Elite Eight. Here's a preview of the three Sweet Sixteen games.
OR is a very talented team.
His standout play meant another invite back to Greece, this time to try out for the senior Greek national team for the 2016 Rio Olympics. No. 1 seed Kansas Although Kansas coach Bill Self got past the Final Four hurdle that many felt plagued his early career years ago, he's still never exactly solved the Elite Eight. The Ducks had five players in double figure scoring, led by the game's leading point producer Sabrina Ionescu with 21 points.
After a transition layup by Big Ten freshman of the year Destiny Slocum the Terps were within 40-37, but Gildon answered with a three-point play to give OR the momentum back.
Oh, and the Jayhawks get to play No. 3 seed OR at Sprint Center, the glass-enclosed downtown arena that happens to sit about 40 minutes from their campus in Lawrence.
Though the Ducks (32-5) led for most of the game, MI had all of the momentum after coming back to take a three-point lead with less than two minutes remaining. "I just thought he was a guard that could play on the ball and off the ball and certainly that's played out to be 100-percent accurate".
Brooks found his shooting stroke as he typically does and scored 19 points despite a 7-for-20 shooting day. He grinned from ear to ear after sinking a mid-range jumper at the 14:02 mark of the second half and Rhode Island appeared poised for another upset after stunning Creighton in the first round two days earlier.
OR is 7-3 ATS in its last 10 games against the Big 12.
With Oregon's season on the brink, Dorsey and Dillon Brooks came through in the clutch as they have so many times this season. In addition to throwing in 15 points, Jackson battled for 12 boards. That said, Kansas has looked very good in this tournament so far, and they're simply blowing teams out.
"Obviously he should be rooting for us in this matchup", Landen said.
OR remains a ideal 10 seed. The Naismith Award finalist is averaging 20.9 points, 5.4 assists, and 4.2 rebounds while shooting 49.4% from the floor and 48.2% from beyond the arc.
Florida hasn't been almost as impressive as all the other teams discussed so far, just 3-3 in its last six games, two of those losses back-to-back defeats to Vanderbilt, which made a first-round exit from this tournament. "I think the four games in Spain really helped and we kind of clicked from the start". The Terps were able to stay close in the first half thanks to Brionna Jones, who had 10 points and seven rebounds before the break.
