Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying says the proposed trip will seriously damage relations between China and India.
"Let's hope his followers in Arunachal Pradesh get satisfaction from his discourses", Khandu said before the Dalai Lama began the first of a series of spiritual teachings at Bomdila on Wednesday morning. "The issues concerning Tibet have a bearing on China's core interests". The spiritual leader said on Wednesday (5 April) that India has never used him for its political benefits.
The 81-year-old Tibetan spiritual leader recalled, on Saturday, during his visit to Assam that "On March 10, 1959, there were huge demonstrations in Lhasa", the Tibetan region's capital.
Articulating the Tibetan stand, the Dalai said, "We are not seeking independence. we are willing to remain within the People's Republic of China".
"Arranging his visit to those sensitive and disputed areas not only runs counter to the Indian side's commitment to the issues related to Tibet but also escalates disputes over the border area", she said.
However, India refused to come under Chinese pressure and said no "artificial controversy" should be created around the visit.
The Dalai Lama (left) and Naren Chandra Das (right) reunite. If the Dalai Lama's reincarnation is found in a traditionally Tibetan area that lies outside China's control, they fear another generation of Tibetan opposition to Chinese rule. China has the highest population of Tibetan Buddhists.
There have been agreements in 1993 and 2005 between India and China that appeared to settle the border disputes by putting Arunachal Pradesh into India, and putting another region, Aksai Chin, on the border with Kashmir, into Chinese territory, as shown on the map above.
So given these stances of the country's media that often contradict each other, one feels Beijing's latest rhetoric on the Dalai Lama's visit to northeast is more of a hollow threat. It said: "China has never thought of making trouble for India, and is handling these issues in accordance with worldwide practices and United Nations regulations".
Kiren Rijiju, Union minister of state for home affairs, who hails from West Kameng district, described the visit as India's "internal affair".
The Tibetan spiritual leader refuted allegations that India was using him as a weapon diplomatically and said India and Tibet had been sharing robust cultural and religious ties for ages.
The Dalai Lama visit may have larger implications because it comes at a time when Beijing is engaged in preparing for the forthcoming meeting between its president Xi Jinping and US president Donald Trump, who has been very critical of China in recent months.
The Dalai Lama last visited Tawang in November 2009.
During his visit, he is also expected to hold a religious discourse at the stadium of Tawang's senior secondary school and will also deliver a public talk on "Secular Ethics and Happiness" at the Kala Wangpo Convention Centre.
Beijing's vigorous condemnation of the visit presages a fresh round of tensions in the India-China relationship.
