A group of coal miners listen to Pruitt on Thursday.
Pruitt was selected to lead the EPA by President Trump earlier this year, and has since garnered pushback from liberals and conservatives alike. EPA's vast regulatory infrastructure also covers the manufacture of fabricated metals, such as those used in glazing systems, and emission standards for vinyl production facilities, which supply to the fenestration industry.
Must we remind Scott Pruitt that EPA stands for Environmental PROTECTION Agency?
Pruitt didn't address whether the administration intends to withdraw from the global climate agreement, which sets ambitious goals to lower carbon-base pollution. She said there is regulatory duplication between the federal government and states that can be streamlined to relieve the burden on the energy industry.
As a candidate, President Donald Trump pledged to revive the struggling US coal industry.
The EPA regulations on chemical plants came to fruition following an Obama-era executive order signed in 2013 to revisit those regulations following the West Texas accident. Consol Energy also made a splash earlier this decade when it chose to transform itself into primarily a natural gas production company after a storied history as a major coal producer.
Penn Future's Larry Schweiger said a rollback of restrictions will have no effect since coal is quickly being replaced by cheap and bountiful natural gas.
PennFuture, a statewide organization touting environmental issues, blasted Pruitt's visit, claiming he is working to dismantle the agency he leads.
"I have decided that it is appropriate and in the public interest to reconsider the rule", Pruitt wrote in a letter sent Wednesday to counsel for a utility group and officials at the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). Trump's decision to attack our right to clean water on behalf of coal executives is just another indication of who this Administration works for - and it isn't American families, but polluters. "We need to push back on this reckless and cynical action that will not even help coal because cheap gas is killing coal in the energy market, and the smart miners know it".
"Trump's EPA chief also wants additional security guards, allegedly to protect him "from his own employee" and "'the left'".
And while there are some who say the accord is not enforceable, Pruitt said, "every meeting I have had with my counterparts from Germany, Canada and others the first question they ask me what are you going to do to comply with Paris?"
