Phyllis Cervantes, right, says a prayer for Tuesday's shooting victims at a memorial of candles and flowers outside Catholic Charities on Wednesday, April 19, 2017 in Fresno, Calif. So he vowed to eliminate as many white men as he could.
Muhammad had prior run-ins with the law, court records show. A federal judge later declared Muhammad mentally incompetent to stand trial. He described the father of two preschoolers as an open-minded person with a sharp wit and big heart.
The final victim was shot dead in the vehicle park of a charity building. Kori Ali Muhammad is the suspect. Greer said he ran into the Catholic Charities building.
"They're so devastated", Wagner said.
She said she knew nothing about her grandson's problems until he was named the suspect in the shootings on Tuesday.
Mark Greer, 62, said Jackson tripped over a curb in the parking lot, falling down when he was shot.
The gunman then fired at a utility vehicle belonging to the Pacific Gas and Electric Company, killing the passenger. Dyer said Muhammad had gotten in a verbal alteraction with Williams and shot him because he felt "disrespected". Police say Williams was unarmed.
The victim in that shooting also was a white male, Dyer said.
Dyer confirmed 17 total shots fired, with a live round left in Muhammad's.357 Magnum, a revolver handgun. He also yelled "Allahu Akbar" (God is greatest) when he was arrested, officials said.
Williams was a supervisor for Toys "R" Us who was at his second job at a Motel 6 when Muhammad shot him multiple times after an argument, police and the mother said.
After killing Jackson, Dyer said Muhammad kept going south until encountering a Hispanic man near Voorman Avenue.
The Fresno shooting rampage in which police say a black man killed three white men in an alleged hate crime took less than two minutes Tuesday.
The chief said investigators don't believe Muhammad worked with anyone else in the attack, calling him "an individual that is filled with hate, filled with anger". "He does not like white people", Dyer said, citing the suspect's statements after being arrested and his Facebook postings.
Muhammad is then believed to have walked on through downtown Fresno, shooting at another white person and missing, sparing two women in a auto who were Latina, and then fatally shooting two more white men, aged 37 and 58, all within less than two minutes before he was taken into custody by police.
Muhammad allegedly told investigators that he hid out in a ravine and practiced voodoo rituals after the Motel 6 slaying.
Dyer also shared a timeline of events that began last Thursday night, when Muhammad allegedly shot a security guard.
Hours before the shootings, police had issued a news release saying Muhammad, who was suspected in the shooting death of a white security guard last week, was armed and risky. Chief Jerry Dyer said. He continued saying that this shooting was "unprovoked".
On Tuesday, police said, he acted on that hatred.
As Muhammad fled, he found another white man - 37-year-old Mark Gassett - on a sidewalk.
She saw her son a few days before he died and spontaneously told him she loved him and was proud of him. He told her loved her too.
In the next three minutes, police say Muhammad killed two more people and shot at several others, shooting 16 rounds of bullets on a stream of people who happened to be in the wrong place.
Two Latina women and a child crossed paths with Muhammad but were luckier.
Dyer said Muhammad admitted to shooting the three men Tuesday, targeting them because they were white and shooting them as if he was on a game hunt. County government buildings were placed on lockdown and residents were urged to shelter in place, according to reports.
