A sadistic survivalist hoping to spark a revolution was found guilty on Wednesday of killing a Pennsylvania state trooper.
Additional charges included aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer, terrorism, using a weapon of mass destruction, possessing an instrument of crime, recklessly endangering others and firing a gun into an occupied structure.
The outcome of Eric Frein's trial is not in doubt. Bryon K. Dickson, 38, of Dunmore, and wounding Trooper Alex Douglass, 34, of Olyphant, in a September 12, 2014 sniper attack outside of the Blooming Grove state police barracks.
Prosecution witnesses testified about the 48-day manhunt that Frein, an experienced outdoorsman, eluded through the dense forests of the Pocono Mountains, about 100 miles north of Philadelphia, in the northeast corner of the state.
Prosecutors presented more than 500 pieces of evidence tying Frein to the attack.
Since he was convicted of first-degree murder, Frein, 33, is eligible for the capital punishment.
Michael Weinstein, one of Frein's defense attorneys, said the verdict "was not unexpected". Bryon Dickson II and seriously injured Trooper Alex Douglass.
"We can't make him a holy man but we will try to make him a man", Ruzzo said.
The defense team did not dispute the charges and did not call any witnesses, but it will present a case in the penalty phase in an attempt to save Frein's life, defense attorney William Ruzzo told reporters.
Closing arguments were scheduled for Wednesday morning. Pennsylvania last used the death penalty in 1999.
The letter, which prosecutors said Frein wrote to his parents while on the run, says only "passing through the crucible of another revolution can get us back the liberties we once had".
He faces a potential death sentence. The dragnet shut down schools and roads and hurt businesses in the mountainous region, which leans heavily on tourism.
Frein showed no emotion as the verdicts were read. He says the verdict means "a brutal murderer will be held accountable for his heinous and cowardly acts".
