Clarke MacArthur scored a power-play goal with 6:30 gone in the first overtime and the Ottawa Senators beat the Boston Bruins 3-2 on Sunday to win their first-round playoff series in six games. A lot of the players know the pain he played through. He was putting his stamp on the franchise and showing Boston's fans that winning the Stanley Cup in 2011 was history and it was time to move forward.
MacArthur was more than the overtime hero in the 3-2 decision over the Bruins.
Bruins interim head coach Bruce Cassidy wants to return next season. "We got in the playoffs, played hard as a group, and then played a heck of a series and every game is a one goal game so it was a hard-fought series that didn't go our way". Here's an updated Stanley Cup bracket.
Drew Stafford and Patrice Bergeron scored for Boston.
Edmonton will visit the Anaheim Ducks beginning Wednesday with Game 2 scheduled for Friday.
The Senators had the 22nd-ranked penalty kill during the regular season at 79.6 percent, three spots behind the Rangers - though just.1 percent difference overall. Already injured David Krejci missed the first two games, wasn't close to being himself in Games 3 and 4 and was reinjured in Game 5. The young rearguard responded with three assists in the playoffs.
It was Ryan's sixth point in as many games.
Kuraly, who played the first two games of the series at Canadian Tire Centre, replaced center Ryan Spooner, an Ottawa native.
Along with McAvoy and Kuraly, the Millers played their best hockey of the year on the blue line. He was also Boston's top shot blocker with 17 blocked shots.
After the game, Karlsson revealed he played the entire series with two hairline fractures in his left heel. His speed allowed him to be very effective on the forecheck forcing Ottawa's defensemen to cough up the puck a couple of times.
Despite being a matchup of the playoff-tested Presidents' Trophy victor with 118 points and the inexperienced eighth seed with 95, Washington and Toronto are separated by only one goal through five games - four of which went into overtime - and are tied at 175 shots apiece. He saw time quarterbacking the first power play unit coming in second in total power play Time On Ice at 16:20.
But nothing can sink a club faster than lack of discipline, especially in a race as tight as the one betweeen the Senators and the Bruins.
Notes: Wideman was scratched after struggling in the Game 5 loss. I think tonight we had a really, really good third period and we needed another goal.
"You miss most of the last two years", MacArthur said, "and you keep working on it, and it's just great to get that opportunity and be able to put away like that". But this time, they were tears of joy. We had three power plays that don't work out and they score on their so mentally it could have effected us.
"Very proud of everyone", Bergeron added. "I think that's going to be the biggest key for (Sunday)".
There would. As you know, because we said so a dozen or so paragraphs ago.
Backes is another Bruin who is eagerly anticipating the start of next season. And there's also coaches Guy Boucher and Marc Crawford.
As a result of the two injuries to top-four defenceman, McAvoy was pressed into early National Hockey League action rather than gaining valuable experience in a potential lengthy playoff run with Providence. But when all was said and done, it was a disappointing way to end the season, and they have no one to blame but themselves. Boston looked like a team with its playoff lives in the balance, and Ottawa looked like a team that was just happy to be there.
"I don't think we think about it at this point, during the regular season that's one thing", said Marc Methot. "That can be tough when guys go down, but the guys did a really good job of stepping up". We seem to push back and forth, alternate captain Dion Phaneuf said.
The future has arrived in Boston.
