Williams and his legislative aide Zach Barth recounted their experiences during Wednesday's attack, which occurred while a group of Republican congressmen were practicing for a charity baseball game scheduled for Thursday. Williams said he was not shot but that a member of his staff was and is receiving medical attention.
Also at practice were U.S. Reps.
Williams said he was injured after he ran from the sound of gunfire and dove into the first base dugout "like. into a pool with no water".
Witnesses said a gunman fired a torrent of bullets at the ballfield around 7 a.m. Police identified the shooter as 66-year-old James Hodgkinson of IL, who was shot by Capitol Police officers and later died from his injuries. He was shot in the calf by gunman James Hodgkinson, but managed to scramble to a dugout, where he hid with Williams and other members of Congress.
The congressman said he was hitting ground balls to Scalise when the shots began, "The first one (ground ball) I hit him, the shots went off". "There was a lot of heroes today, among my friends".
A Capitol Hill police chief said the officers are in good condition.
Ellen further said her brother made a tourniquet to stop the bleeding with his own belt.
The 51-year-old Scalise dragged himself 10 to 15 yards into the outfield to try to get away, leaving a bloody trail, Flake told reporters.
A gunman fired on members of Congress practicing baseball Wednesday morning. "I think that people across our country need to know how important they were and I think we owe everything to them".
"Having a physician there on the field with us was extremely important, and the comfort he gave to Steve Scalise, telling him everything was going to be OK", Brooks said in the interview on GMA, alongside Wenstrup.
Authorities say they've captured two of the four inmates who escaped from the Lincoln County jail earlier this week.
"We plan to have a prayer service and then play some baseball", he said.
Thursday's game will be held at Nationals Park, where the Washington Nationals play.
