She has previously denied any wrongdoing in the case she claims is politically motivated.
The National Front has denied the allegations.
The far-right National Front leader has been handed preliminary charges of breach of trust and complicity in breach of trust concerning two of her aides when she served at the European Parliament. She was also charged for being complicit in the whole party's breach of trust, as the party leader.
The probe and looming possibility of a trial for Ms Le Pen come at a hard time for her party, which was thrown into turmoil by her loss in the presidential race and its lacklustre showing in the legislative elections that followed.
The case was brought as a result of a complaint from the European parliament which accused FN of defrauding it on a large scale.
Earlier this year, in April, it was reported that the EU Parliament believed fake jobs involving Marine Le Pen's National Front party had cost the institution almost Euro 5 million (USD 5.5 million).
In a statement, her lawyer said she would launch an appeal.
Le Pen's bodyguard Thierry Legier was also questioned by investigators but was not charged. Because of that, she had been placed under investigation for "dissemination of violent images".
Her lawyer said she had been summoned by magistrates in Paris and "as expected, placed under criminal investigation". At the end of their work, they will have to decide whether to send the case to trial or dismiss it. She had however promised to cooperate with the investigation after the May presidential and June parliamentary elections were over.
Le Pen had refused to obey previous summons issued during her failed bid to become French president.
The allegations first arose on 27 April, ahead of the second round of voting in the French presidential election. Three of his ministers bowed out of their jobs shortly after being appointed - the justice, defense and European affairs ministers - over concerns they could be caught in the investigations into the political use of salaries to parliamentary aides.
