Justine Ruszczyk, who professionally went by Justine Damond, was a 40-year-old white native of Sydney, Australia. Police say they were responding to an emergency call about a possible assault in an alley behind the home. The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension says that police were called about a possible assault at around 11:30pm.
The bride-to-be would have tied the knot in August with her fiancé Don Damond, according to her fiancé's son.
The former Manly High School student was a qualified veterinarian, and taught meditation and life coaching. The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs put out a brief statement on behalf of her family.

"I am heartsick and deeply disturbed by the fatal officer-involved shooting that happened last night", Hodges said. Most here didn't buy the "reasonable fear" argument that swayed Yanez' jury, and they certainly won't buy a "reasonable fear" argument involving an unarmed woman in her pajamas.
Community anger over the shooting is growing, as family, friends and local activists accuse police of a lack of transparency over what happened.
Tributes from local community groups have also started flowing in.
Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges called the shooting a "tragedy" in a statement released late Sunday.
"Justine was all about love, just bringing your biggest heart forward, no matter what you're doing in life", said Drake. Damond just referred to herself by that name though the pair wasn't married yet - her maiden name is Ruszczyk.
