Mike Williams may need season-ending surgery

Chargers first-round pick Mike Williams could need back surgery and could potentially miss the season, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports. "'This may be a lot more serious than people thought, ' said one source familiar with the injury".

A native of Vance, South Carolina, Williams appeared in 15 games for the National Champion Tigers last season, tallying 1,361 yards on 98 receptions with 11 touchdowns.

The Chargers did not address the wide receiver position in the latest draft, instead bolstering the offensive and defensive lines with four of the six picks following the Clemson product. Schefter noted that the 6-foot-3, 205-pound receiver had a second epidural shot in an effort to be back in time for training camp.

This will be something to keep an eye on heading into training camp to see if the chargers can hold it together. "The team still is hoping that Williams will respond positively to the second epidural, but also knows there's a real chance he will not and his rookie year will be over before it begins". According to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, Williams is responding well to the current treatment. However, it looks as if Williams will start the season on the physically unable to perform list.

The Los Angeles Chargers were riddled with injuries a year ago and another key player might not even make it to the preseason.

Williams' long-term potential remains his biggest asset, and that's why the Chargers invested in him early on draft day.

So no, the Chargers can't catch a break.
